As you may know, we worked with Dropbox on the video that appears on the Dropbox.com front page (when not logged in).  Like most in the video business, we’re always looking for data or other evidence that a video has a positive impact. From time-to-time I check with Dropbox about the video and how it’s impacting their business.  Recently, I received an email from Albert Ni at DropBox that provides a look at the role the video plays and how it’s performing.  I’ve copied his points here: -... A while back I was a part of a panel with Dan Roam, author of The Back of the Napkin and one of his big points during the session was the use of visuals in politics.  This was in the middle of the healthcare debate and he wondered why no one, Obama, Republicans, members of congress, etc. were using visuals to make their cases. I agreed whole-heartedly. Glenn Beck seems to make it work, why not put visuals and whiteboards to work for serious policy discussions? Today I saw that the White House... Continue Reading

BitTorrent, which offers a faster way to download files from the Internet, has had a serious explanation problem.  It’s one of the most used and least understood products on the Web. After working with BitTorrent on a video, it’s easy to see why this is the case - the inner-workings of BitTorrent are complex. It exists in a world that defies comparison. Millions of users know it works exceptionally well, but explaining why and how it works is another story.  This video was a challenge and we... Continue Reading

Signs as Explanations

It's true - I love signs.  I take pictures of them, laugh about them and talk about if they work or not. I think the fascination is related to explanations.  Signs are usually meant to communicate within constraints, much like our videos.  This post is the first in what I plan to make a series. Let's look at a few. This sign is at an establishment on a boat dock in Seattle. Like any "head" or toilet on water, it deserves special care because it doesn't operate like a normal toilet.  Overall, I... Continue Reading

The first video is for Circle Street and as I told Jen at Lilipip, I really like the way they approached this video.  It's informal, fun and tells a story about a problem being solved.  It made the value proposition of Circle Street clear in one minute.  Take a look: Second is a video for Adobe's eLearning... Today we've published a new video:  Wikipedia - Explained by Common Craft Wikipedia is one of those resources that works, but it's not always clear why.  It seems preposterous that 1000s of volunteers could not only create an online encyclopedia, but also make it a trusted resource for millions around the world for many years. But it is a reality.  Wikipedia has become one of the web's biggest success stories.  But how does it really work? What is in place to make sure that the... Continue Reading
