Great video (as usual)!

I just got serious about Twitter today - so great timing on this. I became aware of it several months ago, but am getting into it now.

One question - where were the "Yaaaa's" and "Booo's"?

WELL DONE

Amazingly well done explanation of it that anyone can understand. Thank you for doing this.

Great Work

I agree this was very well done, as it seems all your videos are. Definitely keep up the great work!

I love it!

I love this video. It's so simple and funny. I will be sharing this on my blog. Thanks!
By the way, I found out about this post through Twitter ;)

How fun is this?!!! Great

How fun is this?!!! Great way to explain complex answer when people ask What is Twitter. Great way to showcase your brilliance. And ditto to the comment above -- I found this through Twitter:)

I'm @EricaRKrieger

tip of the iceberg

Your videos are always done well, but I think you are a missing a bit piece of what Twitter is. Sure, Twitter asks the questions "what are you doing?", but I find that very few people stick to answering it. In fact, if that's all people responded to, I think it would be very, very boring.

What is has allowed people (the educators I know) do is more deeply connect to each, share resources, share online opportunities, collaborate more conveniently, poll each other, etc. etc. etc. Twitter has become the gateway to deeper, more meaningful communication ... and this is because followers are not strictly doing what it was meant for.

It would be interesting to see an advance Twitter (microblogging), Twitter for educators, type video that would extend beyond the very basics here.

Don't get me wrong ... I think you've done a great job here, as always, but I think you're missing the big pieces that draw people to Twitter and that make them stay connected.

Thanks Lee and Sachi,
All the best.

I agree!

I'd like to see an advance twitter video on how organizations can use it to make their content come to the surface!!

Great explanation!

I am a fan of your videos. I love this one. Explaining Twitter is very hard to do but this makes sense.

I am so happy for Carla taking up a new passion for Van Halen in this video.

Keep up the great work!

Awesome

This is one of the best videos I have seen in awhile. Clean, concise, informative and fun! Great job, I'm sharing with everyone!

@lyf108

tip of the berg indeed

I'll second what Alec pointed out. A blogger/twit ("MrChase") likened Twitter to a faculty lounge for teachers. I find that analogy has some truth to it. It's a great place to constructively connect and equally, a "great" place to completely waste your time. A lot of it depends on who is in the lounge when you happen to walk in.

But the fact is, if Twitter was primarily a tool to describe typical daily activities to friends, it would little to no value for me at all.

Great (again)

Great work again Lee. I have copies of all your web 2.0 videos on my N95 that I show clients when they ask "What is a wiki?" (Quoted from an IT rep at one business)

PS

Oop's forgot to ask - are you going to provide a .mov download for this video?

Coming Soon

Hi Jim,
We'll be providing a downloadable version soon.

Something missing

I agree with the comments that say there's something missing. This is very much 'Social Twitter' rather than than the myriad of other functions Twitter can offer. It doesn't touch on the connectedness of colleagues or establishing a community of practice. It's a useful introduction but Twitter isn't all about the social 'I'm drinking coffee' element just as blogs aren't all simply online diaries (which the blogging in plain English video covers beautifully).

Oh, and no 'yays' or 'boos'?! Booooo! :o)

True enough, however....

I agree with the several comments that Twitter is much more than just the "what are you doing". Yet Twitter itself hasn't updated that catch phrase since their inception, despite numerous enhancements to the service that encourage the other community building, information dissemination, and short witticism sharing that have become far more prevalent on Twitter. I think the reason is that "what are you doing" is still a good hook to get people in....it's hard to describe the additional benefits until you get in and start to experience them. Constant "cooking dinner"s would indeed be horribly boring, which is why it quickly evolved past that. But all of us who are avid (nay, addicted) Twitterers still all started there. So as a tool to get the beginner started, I think Lee and Sachi have nailed it again.

I also have to throw in Scott Brown's term I love from his commentary in the Feb 2008 Wired: Twitter allows us all to be "selectibitionists". A slight tangent, I just like to say that word.

And finally, it would be nice to answer once and for all the age-old question: is a post to Twitter a Twit or a Tweet?

Great!

Thanks!!

Thank You!

I was so hoping you would do one of your wonderful videos for Twitter. I wanted to get my friends on it but didn't know how to explain it. This will be of great help.

Thank You!!

Thanks

Thanks a lot for another wonderful explanation video. These are a real help!

this is useful

I have been trying to make my friend use twitter, finally she did, but it seems she does not totally understand its effectiveness, I am going to email this to her. You are great

Re: Iceberg

Sure, there's more to Twitter than "What are you doing?" However, this video is a direct, crisp introduction to Twitter. If it tried to demonstrate everything Twitter's good for, that would increase its length and dilute its direct power.

I think it's great as it is. Well done!

Excellent explanation

Twitter has a potential to deliver more then the other Web 2 sites. It 's easy to connect with the people you know. It's still a bit challenging connecting with total strangers -perhaps, it's the weariness of stockers. The "following" concept may not be fully understood yet. I am at @fsechzer.

Awesome!

Lee, Sachi... mark my words: AWESOME! You guys did it again! This video is even better than the one on RSS (which is brilliant!).

I love the animations of people thinking and how the bubble gets transformed into a Twitter entry.

For the record: My twitter @abarrera :)

Twitter vs. Facebook?

Hello Lee and Saachi !
I had not really heard about Twitter before, but while watching the video, I wondered how this was better than using the "status" line in Facebook to describe what you're up to, and see what your friends are doing. I guess there is no use of using both Twitter and Facebook?
Thanks again for a clear explanation, I'm a huge fan of yours :-)

-Ve from Montreal

Twitter works within facebook

there is a cool application I am now using in facebook to add my twitter updates (just search the aps for twitter). I still update in facebook when I am there but am using twitter more and more. Also see my twitter page for a cool podcast I just listened to about etiquette
on twitter so people will really want to follow you. twitter.com/stacieadams. I agree with others here that the real value in twitter is if you use it in a narrow biz niche you can really stay on top of cutting edge developments in an industry.

Thanks for Saving My Voice! (again)

Lee & Saachi,

People always ask me "What is Twitter?", and my usual response is "Mob-Driven Instant Messaging"...Which usually causes them to cock their heads like confused puppies.

Now I can just send them the link to your awesome video (like I do for Social Bookmarking & Blogs).

It would be great if you could do a video on "What is Social Media Marketing?"

Thanks,
John Atkinson

Spot On

Thanks for the video, Well laid out and like always simple and easy to understand. I've been on Twitter for awhile, convincing friends that they should consider joining up too has always been a challenge, this will make it easier.

Yea!

Finally a video that make sense on the value of Twitter and what it is designed to do! Thanks

Great video again

Hi, this is great, what I really like about all the Plain English videos is the human aspect you bring to it - how the web fits into human activities - its great for an intro video to what Twitter is about - thank you !

Nicola

This is great! I love what

This is great! I love what you do.

I am new to twitter & this will be a great link to send to friends and family who know nothing about it. Thanks!

Nicely done!

Thanks for doing this topic.

Well done as usual - two-thumbs up!

Missing the Point

When I first heard about Twitter I thought, "What's the point?" I figured that it was just what you depict in your video, but it's not. It's much more.

My Twitter network is a learning community. We share resources and ideas. We have real conversations. Read the blogs and see what people are really saying about Twitter and it's uses.

And it's also for business!!

No, really, it is! I get breaking news and hear what's going on in my field. I get as many links as I could possibly follow to innovative technologies, many still in beta. People in my area (across fields) also have TweetUps, where we network and offer assistance to each other (in addition to consuming beer and wine). I'm a total believer.

Nice one

Lee and Sachi -- Another great succinct explanation -- sending it around the office now.

Oh great, Lee, now you've done it

If you popularize Twitter like this, it might go down while we're at SXSW. Don't tell any more people, ok? :-)

Seriously, good timing on this one. My first Twitter was about a year ago at SXSW (I think that was the first time it went down, ah... memories)

I didn't really get Twitter at first and I thought that it represented all the worst things about blogging (navel gazing, echo chamber). Here is a link to the day I spent talking about my cat in protest of Twitter. I even annoyed myself - http://twitter.com/account/archive?page=52

Eventually, I came around.

My family, who is generally far away have a much better sense of the what is going on in my life (even though sometimes I forget to call) and I've had a number of unplanned meetups with folks as a result of Twittering my location.

Now, if only they could make it more reliable....

Thanks for another great video and safe travels this weekend.

Cheers,
Randy

Very Helpful

Very Helpful Video... Nice work. I heard about twitter but not sure if I could use it. Seems like a lot of extra overhead in the day. I don't have enough time as it is!

Leaving room for creative applications....

Kudos and gratitude to the common craft folks.

I managed to figure out RSS, social bookmarking, blogs and wikis by myself -- but I was *very* relieved to use your videos to explain them to others (especially to fellow faculty)...so this time I waited until you figured Twitter out for me and make one of your illuminating videos...many thanks!!

I am actually quite glad you didn't put the "business elements" in, because it allows room for viewers to think about how this social tool can work for them, in ways they need. Keeping the videos basic helps all of us understand the fundamentals of how the software works, while allowing viewers to ruminate on the "more than just personal uses" -- one video can only do so much!

Thanks again for your creativity & clarity. I use RSS, wikis, blogs and socialbookmarking everyday; while I may not use twitter today, now that I know how it works, I may find that it is the software that exactly fits the bill for some future communication need.

Two things

I think a lot of the folks got it right that there's something missing. There are a couple of things I noticed weren't in this video.

The humor (including the obligatory "yeah" and "boo" line) is missing. What I liked about that line is that it helped me understand in plain English how the technology was making my life better.

Maybe it's just me, but the emphasis on "What are you doing?" creeps me out a little. It's like a lot of folks mentioned, that very little of Twitter usage really focuses on that question. But the point in the video is very well stated -- the question "makes us feel connected and a part of each other's lives." So we learn more about each other's passions in life, etc. But there's something about the video that makes the point sound like, " it helps us keep tabs on one another."

Twitter user - @joeventures

BRILLIANT.... AGAIN!

What can I say another excellent exPLAINation.

it would be so cool to have

it would be so cool to have a desktop twitter interface that looked like the papercuts in the video.

Good job!

Make sense. Great for newbies. Simple and sweet.

Thumbs up to leelefever!

Roice
http://cool-tools-on-the-net.blogspot.com

I was just kidding but...

it looks like you already broke Twitter.

Quick Thanks

Thanks so much for the kind words and interesting discussion folks. It's always fun to see the different perspectives on something like Twitter. That's the beauty of it - there really isn't one true way. It's up to each person to figure out what's going to float their boat.

For what it's worth, we see the "what are you doing?" question as a gateway drug to all the amazing things that can happen. :) Cheers!

Another Dissenting Opinion

Well ... I usually love the commoncraft videos. And I definitely love Twitter! Frankly, I couldn't do my job without Twitter, and don't know how I ever survived before it came along! So I was all prepped and ready to just adore this video. :) But. Well. It ... doesn't begin to touch on any of what makes Twitter so exciting and useful for me. How about you take a look at:

http://www.toprankblog.com/2008/03/reader-poll-how-do-you-use-twitter

and maybe give this another go? For the folks I want to recruit to Twitter this video would simply reinforce the irrelevance of it for them. For me, Twitter has replaced RSS feeds as the way I keep current in my work.

Twitter is Crowdsourcing and News Aggregation Too

Your video quality is, as usual, excellent.

But the point of Twitter for me is almost entirely the part you left out. It's better than a feed reader in some respects, and it's a great way to get input on tough issues.

Based on all the comments here, I'd suggest tweaking the last 30 seconds and re-saving it...

~Jim

Excellent Intro

Great timing. I've been trying to explain twitter to some non-geek types and this video fills the need perfectly - just like the rest of your videos.
It is a great intro video - and even though twitter can be "so much more", for the common user, it is about staying connected and you presented that main aspect perfectly.
Thanks!

Fabulous Explanation

Well done. A great job explaining Twitter, and i love the quote "because real life happens between blog posts and email."

Nice work

Excellent way to get the message across.

D

sorry...

nothing against you: I love your videos, but I had to make fun of twitter here, http://effinglibrarian.blogspot.com/2008/03/no-time-for-twitter.html

Help for Facebook Users

Most of my friends would see this and think its cool but not understand how they can also use it with Facebook. I know it might be a little technical to mention, but there is a Facebook app called TwitterSync that will, uh, sync one's facebook status with Twitter.

Maybe a line in the video like "... and there are ways to sync your Twitter updates with your status on Facebook and other social networks." might help.

More Twitter 101

Thanks for the video. I too have been finding Twitter invaluable both socially and professionally, getting everything from content syndication deals to advice on what to do about my four-year-old's current habit of running away. I am going to add a link to your video to my recent article explaining Twitter to the business commuity at:

What about the other microblogging sites?

Hi Lee and Saachi

Thanks for your great way of explaining. I have used your videos to try to explain others.

Regarding microblogging (Twitter) I feel that I am missing the commenting opportunity, in twitter, that Jaiku gives me.

What do you think on this?

Br

Frankly speaking I would

Frankly speaking I would like to join twitter but don't know how to maximized its potential and also I don't have any idea what it is all about and questions myself about what content is appropriate for a Tweet but after viewing your video I tried joining it and I find out that -it is much faster as writing a blog post, as fast as an sms or IM. Anyway this video is much help for me. I would surely share your links in some people who needs to know about twitter.

Thank you from many Irish artists/CraftsPeople

Thank you for making it simple.
I write a newsletter and blog to Irish Artists and crafts people in Ireland. Creative people honestly have no interest in computers...I know this because it was a huge effort to get my head around blogging, I started last October. (Last week I attended the Irish Blog Awards and was on the short list.) I am a crafts person and really need the visual aids you provide to get what it is all about.
I direct the groups of people I work with to your blog so they too can get it!!
Please never even consider stopping....too many people need things spelt out in plain english.
Twitter has been bugging me...I always ask why bother....I actually thought blog was a bad word.

Keep up the great work and I will keep sending people your way!
Thanks Karen

Thanks

Nice.

It's funny how many times I have found myself explaining Twitter lately. I'm going to let you do the work for me.

Thanks

Saying hi!

I'm new to this! Just sayin' hello!

Twitter Explanaiton video

Love the video.

Hate twitter.

We are a culture suffocating under an avalanche of pointless interruption. Twitter is the opposite of meaningful interaction. Fear it. Shun it.

Thank you...

for providing me with videos I use to education real estate agents at my company.

Multiple Uses

These videos certainly have multiple uses! Thanks much for sharing.

Perfect!

love the video, guys! i just posted it on my blog... i've gotta convince more of my friends to get on twitter! thanks for sharing...

Essential Web 2.0 tool

Wow - you mean I can actually find out when my friends around the world are having a cup of tea, or mowing the lawn? I gotta get me some of this action...

Thank you

Twitter is such a weird beast - sometimes entertaining sometimes totally frustrating - still deciding myself.

Looking forward to following you guys though because you always educate.

Good Stuff!

Hi. I found your site through GeekBrief.tv. Love it. You make it easy for me to explain all these concepts and ideas to noobs and people like my parents..

Just wondering if you guys are doing one on podcasts. It's another idea which many people have heard about, but not many really understand..

Thanks and keep making these great videos!

wow!!

this is fantastic video... so simple, to make someone understand as to what twitter is all about and amazing use of paper cuttings!! brilliant!!

Keeping up on trends...

I think I'll just keep checking back here to be in the know on the latest trendy sites. I'd heard of Twitter, but didn't know what it was all about. Thank for taking the time to break it down.

Twitter for business development?

I am a real estate broker and have seen some folks in the blogosphere talking about twitter for use as a tool to develop business.

Any thoughts on this? Seems like a tool you would only use with people you already know pretty well.

i don't get it.

so twitter is basically a crippled chat room?

i don't understand what is so revolutionary about this (although that's my opinion about most things "web 2.0" anyway).

this just contributes to the already massive amount of information pollution on the internet.

Thanks again

Haven't had much time for Twitter, will have to carve more time out of whats left of my sleep time, pretty soon I won't have any of that left, lol...

Kudos

I just love your Twitter video. Some of my friends try to explain Twitter but most of them just don't get it. Your video captured its essence.

The video was enjoyable to watch and easy to understand. Well done!

I'll be blogging about it soon ...

The best video on common

The best video on common craft

very interesting

Thought it was very interesting! thanks!

Praise from a struggling tweeter

Thanks for 'saying it so well' as you always do :)

Brilliant

Perhaps this should be required watching for new twitter users, like safety/harassment training at the office. Some twitter users, particularly new ones, want all tweets to be "useful".

What they do not realize is that the aggregation of tweets --regardless of what they are-- IS incredibly useful.

This video is based on the intent of twitter. I would be really interested in a Common Craft take on the extended twitter footprint including:

  • Twitter Search
  • Twitter Trending
  • Other Twitter Apps

Twit

This is the first of your vids I've watched and I've gotta say it was great - reminding me of my religious studies group in primary school - The teacher used to have felt figures which she stuck on a board somehow (it was before Velcro) and we'd stare at the baby Jesus and Mary and the cows in the manger wondering which would fall off first - as they always fell. Very cool. merci beaucoup.

It's a briliant demo, thanks

It's a briliant demo, thanks for the great tips.

How do you use Twitter on a Cell Phone

I think you video is great...I'd just like to know how to use Twitter from a cell phone.

Excellent video. I've been

Excellent video. I've been using this video whenever someone asks me what Twitter is.

Thanks for the CC license.

Great Post - I never got Twitter before

I not if I really understand how to use it in real estate but I at least get the concept now. :)

I've had some trouble getting it to work with my Cell phone here in Canada, but first I need to get some friends going to to keep track of.

Great video! For some reason

Great video! For some reason I thought Twitter was extremely complicated, guess not. :)

Business uses for Twitter

Look at who's using Twitter for business:

---The American Red Cross uses it push out information during emergencies like tornadoes throughout the Midwest.

--Dell computers uses it to monitor its brand.

--Comcast uses it to pinpoint customer service problems, then responds immediately.

--Journalists and broadcasters use it to stay on top of the competition, and also to monitor Twitter for breaking news

You can read more about how to use Twitter for public relations and publicity at http://tinyurl.com/3wg6xv

I'm Using Twitter!

I have been dabbling on Twitter and was afraid it was like an AOL chat room for lonely adults.

Later after viewing your video I realize it actually has some meritorious use. Thanks again.

You can find me on Twitter @lauderdaleagent

In one day after watching your video I already received a noticeable spike in traffic on my Fort Lauderdale Real Estate Blog. Thanks Lee.

awesome

I had a personal account on Twitter, but didn't really use it much... however, it's a great tool for getting updates from your favorite websites. Some of my favorite online retailers (for clothes, ebooks, audiobooks, etc) use it to promote sales... good way of getting information immediately rather than waiting for promotional mailers to come out. Thanks for the info!

Commercial Applications

Ok, so I have started to see the value in Twitter, which only occurs once you are actually following some interesting people who put up posts with some value, which normally consists of a short comment and a link to something interesting. So obviously the commerical applicaitons are as follows;

1) receive new, timely information, e.g. uranium prices are about to run up due to the chinese cornering the market. ok, let's buy uranium.

2) plug your own website, e.g. hey, check out my California Real Estate Website and hope that enough people are following you that you actually increase meaningful traffic received.

Am I still missing the point? Please help.

I just read this article

I just read this article about how twitter can help your business grow. Your post has been very helpful in understanding the concept better.

Finally - I now understand Twitter!

The video was (Well Done) and easy to understand.

I love your Videos!

Just found your site and I love them! They are so fun. Your business is really neat.

Your videos rock!

this is the best Twitter tutorial vid ever. YOu've managed to explain the whole concept in a brief, no-nonsense manner, and in just under 3 minutes.

That's Pretty Neat

I could not get a clear idea what Twitter was by viewing the website and not signing up. This was a great intro. I really like the video style, whatever it is called.

Windows Live Writer

Can you do a plain english video for this program?

I love your videos, so easy! I was getting stressed out with all of these new programs/websites from a class I'm taking at Harris Real Estate University.

I was stressed out that I was getting behind. Your videos are showing me that blogging is easy.

Thank you!

Didn't know this existed

This is pretty cool. I was completely oblivious about the whole social networking side of the web. I am going to go and check it out.

New translation in french for "Twitter in plain English"

Hi,
I really enjoyed your explanation of Twitter and decided to share it with my french friends. Unfortunately, they do not speak english. So I've made a french translation of "Twitter in plain English". I have tried to be as clear, concise and accurate as you are in the original one. If you are interested by the SRT file, I can send it to you on demand.

It's Makes Sense

Thanks for the video explaining Twitter. I watched it several months ago. I think I have the hang of it now. I'm still a little challenged on replying back to some from my cell phone. All of your video demos are great.

URLs Too

I just love following my friends "finds" on the net via the url's they post. It's a kewl feature.

I love your videos and plan on using them to show some friends and family how to use some the features on the internet.

Thanks much!

OK, I'll give it a try

Thanks for a great video! I have heard a lot about twitter lately but wasn't sure if I could use it for my business. I'll give it a shot. I guess I could do a twitter about each of my products and when I get new items. I wasn't sure people would care to follow me though.

In Spanish

Pleeeeeease! In Spanish!!!!

Thanks!

I agree this was very well done. Thanks!
