Video: Phishing Scams in Plain English

Hey Lee and Sachi, love your work and have been subscribed to your RSS feed for quite some time. I was just curious if someone recommended you make this video, or if you have noticed a recent spike in phishing emails in your inbox? Lately I have been getting plagued with phishing scams and if another Nigerian prince sends me an email I think I am going to lose it. : )

Anyways keep up the good work and the "RSS in Plain English" has saved me a lot of time explaining it to friends.

So fun to watch and so informative. I already know about phishing (and yes, I take great pains to never visit any link from an email and instead always visit bookmarked sites instead.)

The only real phishing emails I get are PayPal. Dear PayPal Customer :).

Businesses that use Extended Validation SSL Certificates offer the EASIEST way to spot fraudsters and protect you from phishing Web sites.

Look for the GREEN URL bars in EV Enabled browsers (Internet Explorer 7.0, Firefox 3.0, Opera 9.5, and the new Google Chrome). The URL bar actually TURNS GREEN to verify that the web site is who they say they are.

Here are some other visual cues to look for:
-A padlock icon in either the lower or upper right-hand corner of the screen
-https:// in the browser (the "s" stands for secure)
-Prominent misspellings and frequent grammatical errors are signs that a Web site is fraudulent.

With the recent credit crisis and banks failing left & right, these types of scams are more prevalent more than ever. Luckily, google has some type of protection if the website has already been discovered as cloan and reported, however, you do have to be careful. If you read around the stories only about people being scammed it would blow your mind. Just be smart and use some common sense and you will have nothing to worry about.

Of course this explanation is very clear to understand, but are there in the today world such people who believe for example in lies about bank website? I don't know such dunces

I am going to take a wild guess here....this was probably not a client paid video. You guys probably decided to do it simply because it is an important subject to cover. So congratulations on yet another great video.

I used this great video on an a post I wrote titled "IRS Tax Rebate Scam via Email" and also in Spanish "Fraude de Reembolso de Impuestos Federales via Email"

As to me there are always be people who want to earn at the expense of others. So we should only be ready for these unpleasant situations

Secondly, and I'm sorry to splash water on the fire - I think the video is great, by the way - but one thing in the video isn't 100% true anymore. There are now viruses in existence that can infect your computer just by VISITING a web site or RECEIVING an email message (without opening it). I don't think the latter works for an online email account, but POP email accounts using software on your computer are susceptible.

I don't know if this makes changing your video really worth the trouble though.

Uh, it's "you're" as in "You are American." "Your" implies ownership. As in "Your grammar is poor.

Leave these guys alone and take a grammar class.
