Data Portability For Non-Geeks
By leelefever on January 16, 2008 - 5:07pm
If you look at DataPortability.org, it's obvious they have an explanation problem. I'm not likely their target audience, but "Turnkey Reference Blueprints" don't exactly make me want to get involved.
That's why I like this video by Smash Cut Media - it focuses on the pain of having to keep up with data across mutiple web sites - and how the Data Portability workgroup is helping to solve the problem. It's a bit flashy, but effective and fun to watch.

Thanks for the link love!
Hey Lee!
Thanks for sharing this! As a big fan of Common Craft it's really cool to be on these much-visited digi-pages :)
Look forward to seeing you in Sapporo!
Get the message
You're right, I klicked the link to dataportability and found it awful - even though I read their FAQ but didn't get the point. Then I saw your video and now "everything is clear in our world" (John Lennon :-) )
I also have hundreds of accounts and even an Open-ID - would appreciate it if dp had success.
Cool video!
Can't wait
This sounds truly incredible - the first half of that video summed up everything that frustrates about social networking; I simply don't have time for all the sites. I'm only part-geek nowadays but this is the most exciting idea I've seen in a while. More exciting that the Mac Air preview I got this morning, which is definitely saying something in my world.
OpenID?
So, just saw something about Open ID (some kind of single login that joins a lot of social network software programs) and how Yahoo will be joining. Is this a duplication of effort? Will we now be going to a phase where there are many "universal" IDs and we'll then have to choose? Aaargh! Somehow I can't help but think that the answer will have something to do with cash flow...
Open ID
Hi Kathy,
I'm not a pro at these issues, but as I understand it, Open ID is one part of Data Portability. It's what gives you the ability to maintain and control your login information. Data Portability is a combination of a number of standards like Open ID. The goal is actually to *not* have multiple universal IDs - that's why people are excited about Yahoo and other big companies supporting it - it makes it closer to being a real standard across everything.
I'm not sure if I know what you mean by cash flow? As in brands making money off this idea? Data Portability and Open ID are designed to not be based on money - think of it like a UPC bar code - it's a standard that everyone uses.
If other readers know more, or need to correct anything I've said, please do...
OpenID is a part of DataPortability
Yes, OpenID fits with DataPortability. For the most part, DataPortability (DP) is a collection of existing tools. Expanding upon OpenID will create progress, but DP is meant to be a variety of solutions, not just one.
It will take some time but the tide is certainly changing.
This is rather exciting!

Data Portability for Business
Are there any initiatives on DataPortability for Businesses? I was thinking about a manufacturer having his product data in a portable format and publishing it on his website, different B2B portals, catalogues etc. I can't really find anything going beyond social networks.
