Client Video: Buying a Home with Redfin

Redfin is disrupting an industry that really needs disruption: real estate.  A local Seattle company, they came to us because people often misunderstand what it means to use an "online real estate brokerage."  See if this video makes it clear for you. (RSS readers - go here)




Our challenge was to make clear how Redfin works, but more importantly, create a sense of confidence in the company's model. As their CEO Glenn Kelman put it in our first meeting, Redfin is "all about the love" and we designed this video to relate that sense of emotion too.  As a side note, Glenn is a great example of a CEO blogger - check out his recent post about his appearance on the Today Show.

Common Craft Rocks

I am not an easy man to please. And explaining how Redfin works isn't easy either.

But this is what Common Craft has done, and quite beautifully, with breathtaking speed, and on budget. Rather than just re-hashing our own marketing materials, Sachi and Lee interviewed our agents and our customers to break the actual Redfin experience down into its parts and then build it back up into a whole that is more simple and straightforward than anything we had managed to say about ourselves in our two years of offering this service.

Where every other marketing or Internet service tried to make us sound or act like everyone else, Common Craft's home-made appeal, brilliant graphics and personable narration expressed something essential about what Redfin wants to mean to people.

As a result, Lee and Sachi have really changed how we think about ourselves -- which is what all true art does -- and made a huge difference in our business too: thousands of people watch the video every month, and we've seen an increased likelihood (big-time) among visitors to our site to do business with us, which we attribute to their work.

Great as always, but one missing element

Great video, and helps explain Redfin quite clearly.

My only beef is the missing Shaka... I've come to love it from you, Lee. You're letting your adoring public down by only saying "Yeah!", sans-shaka.

Great boil down of the RedFin model. Excellent marketing. Note, for those curious on more details around RedFin ... I did a writeup of RedFin here based on detail notes from a Scoble interview of them in 03/07 (and included a link back to this as it was the best explanation I saw of the model).

Again, great work. If you want, you might email me around the ballpark costs for such a segment. I have a similar business model to RedFin and something like this could really help.

Your system wouldn't apply in Texas where Buyer's Agents get paid by the Builder or Brokerage who sell the property and not by the Buyer or Seller. Buyers don't pay any of the agent's commissions, and if an agent does give a buyer any part of their commission, commonly refered to as a concession, it's usually a way of getting a client to use their services - in other words a "Bribe".

Can you imagine a Doctor saying. "If you'll let me operate on your brain, I'll give you 2/3 of my salary for that operation!" The best doctors don't work that way, and neither do the best agents ~ at least not down in these parts.

If you found someone (an agent) who will actually give a client 2/3 of a salary they could keep for themselves and their family, in essence, they must work three times harder than the average agent just to make the same income. Good for the client, but not fair to the poor real estate agent. Hey, but if your making money at someone elses expense - more power to you.

By the way, how come you don't show the houses for one third???
