Explainist.com - Where Did You Go?
By leelefever on December 11, 2008 - 1:15pm
By the time I discovered the blog at Explainist.com, it had gone dark. The authors "Tom" and "Dave" had covered Common Craft , Scott McCloud's work at Google and a host of other explanation-related topics since January of 2007. Now the blog has sat unused since September 4th.
I'm writing because I hope Explainist.com will come back. I've tried to find the owner of the site, but the WHOIS lookup only shows the host's name. I even thought Tom and Dave might be the Tom Crawford and Dave Gray from VizThink and Xplane (respectively), but they don't claim credit either.
Tom and Dave, if you're listening, please consider cranking up Explainist.com again. There are lots of great things happening in the explanation world and we'd love to see your blog help cover it all.

You know...I think comment
You know...I think comment #2 above might be spam. It's incorrect English (no offense if it's a real person) and generic. Did you check the link?
We'll be back
Hi Lee,
Thank you for the kind words and encouragement -- a helpful kick in the pants to get things going again, for sure.
Dave and I are Dave Coustan and Tom Harris, both formerly of HowStuffWorks. I was one of HSW's original staff writers and was the editorial director there for several years. Dave wrote for HSW too, and was the producer in charge of Stuffo, HSW's late, great pop culture spin-off. Dave was also behind Earthling, EarthLink's corporate blog. Today, he blogs at Extraface.com.
Thanks again for the nudge. More posts are on the way.

Explainist is back
their newest post about Explanatory Filenames at http://www.explainist.com/?p=33
makes a great point: When naming files to send, think of the receiver and make it easy for the next people down the line to get their work done. I would add, do not use proprietary file formats unless requested. Use .PDF and .RTF, but not .DOC, not everyone uses MS-Word.
Thanks!
I think this post really contributed to explanist going active again. I always thought it was an interesting blog too. Thanks for giving it a "kick in the pants"!
