Finally, I've Had Enough Email Spam
By leelefever on May 23, 2005 - 12:29pm
It's been years coming, but I've finally taken steps to reduce email spam. It was always a pain, but so easy to delete and sometimes mildly entertaining. Plus, it always bugged me to find out that a person didn't reply because my address was deemed spam by a machine. Now, I guess I'm part of that problem.
Just now, I enabled a Spam Assassin on my wonderful web host, Dreamhost. It's apparently pretty aggressive, so I've taken the time to go through a bunch of old emails and whitelist everyone I can find. This was actually a good exercise because it reminded to get in touch with some old friends.
I tried to get everyone on the whitelist that I'm communicating with regularly, but I may have missed some. I promise to keep up with quarantined emails, but I wanted everyone to know that the filter is in place, just in case.
Let's hope it works.

Lee, I hope it works as well for you as it has for me. My ISP installed SA a couple of years ago. And after a fairly short time fiddling with the threshhold value I just route all mail w/ a SA value > 7 to my Trash bin. I look at the Trash maybe once a month, but basically I ignore it and delete it every night.

Hi, I use my ISP's spam filter to "tag" potential spam then a software package (Mailwasher) to preview it on the ISP server before downloading. Find they are about 95-97% accurate tagging spam but its a quick way to catch the valid emails without downloading any junkmail.

Hey Bill, just so ya know- your email address- whitelisted! :)

I'm "afraid" of doing it. Afraid I'll miss the one good e-mail or the one big proposal or something like that. But, I also don't know much about the program. So, maybe it works well and I am simply worried out of ignorance...

Last night I was put at more ease by a surprise email from "Junk Email Filter" that said "The following messages are being held in your Junk Filter".
That type of email notification makes me feel better...

That's cool. What format is it in? Does it display the subjects? Who it is from? Subjects linked to the actual e-mails or something? Curious. :) Thanks.

Yeah, it shows the address it was from, the subject line, when it was posted and the "score" which relates to how suspect it is. I can use the list to make sure that it's not making mistakes, for sure.

Thanks. Perhaps I'll give it a try.

If you log into the main webmail (http://webmail.dreamhost.com/src/login.php), and choose options, you can set up the frequency of those junk email lists and deletion schedules as well as other setttings.
