Online Community as Party
By leelefever on June 17, 2007 - 9:08pm
A while back I posted an entry called Your Community is a Party Waiting to Happen that outlined a number of common sense ways that hosting a party is like managing an online community. I really believe the metaphor is useful and I've developed a talk on the subject.
Here are the slides from the talk...

this is great. as someone
this is great. as someone who has spent close to a decade producing events i am constantly trying to express the same analogy but from the other direction: how parties are like just like social media :).
altho as an event producer i will say this:
while a party absolutey does need organizers, some of the BEST parties are the ones where the "host" is either invisible, or a non-personified "concept" (i.e. brand). any event needs a reliable infrastructure to keep from devolving into total chaos (like... who do you go to if someone gets injured, for instance?) but unless it's someone's birthday or wedding people do not come to an event for the "host." they come for the experience. (some "hosts" have a reputation for the best parties.)
and while that reputation may have convinced them to come, it's going to be people they met and shared the experience with that will be the reason they are glad they came.
sweet!
Great stuff!
I think this is a perfect way to introduce the concept of community and really gets to some of the meat of what makes a healthy community function.
Thanks for sharing!
Awesome slideset
I've heard the comparison before that online communities are like parties and that party hosts would be good resources for building online community. Nice to see it all broken down in the slides.
Wonderful!
Lee - I love it. I have started up a community for community builders/organizers, and would love to include your slides as a resource. Is that OK?
Also would love to have you check out the site, and perhaps participate if it tickles your fancy.

Of Course
Thanks for the kind words Peter. Please feel free to reuse the slides as a resource. Cheers!
Great stuff!

We have implemented the tips from this article on our website. Please leave your comments!
Very Interesting...
The topic is interesting and the slideshow is amazing! Would the owner/creator allow everybody to reuse the slides as a resource... With source link? Or is the permission just for Peter Gulka? (see comment to Peter above)
Re-using Slides
