When asked what sort of videos we make it's a bit hard to explain in normal terms. They're not really instructional or how-to, they have elements of marketing and promotion and some say they are entertaining. Here's a few options - maybe you have more?
Infodocutainmercials?
Explanatainment?
Docuinfotainment?
Explanapromomercials?
Explanadocuinfotainmercials?
or maybe just...
explainment?
By the way, don't expect to see any of this on the Common Craft business cards - just for fun.
Any suggestions?
Have a suggestion? Tell us about it, please.
Give [ it ] a name
You already have the right name Lee ! It's.......something..... IN PLAIN ENGLISH !
exterplainment
Of the list: explainment
Or to make it more fun: exterplainment
Then again, neither of those are plain English.
What about MMM
Could be MMM : Multi Media Module
or MMMM : Multi Media Mini Module
or MMMM : Mini Multi Media Module
... kidding :-)
Explaincasts, or Plaincasts.
Explaincasts, or Plaincasts.
Terms....
How about Infodocucast?
Take advantage of old school trends and market it as: iNfo.Docu.cst
I do like "plaincasts" though.
Definitely....
"Explainment" Like your videos, it's simple and to the point.
I second...
Explainment. Simple, understandable, concrete and goofy.
Cheers,
Randy
I like the way "explainment"
I like the way "explainment" sounds, but it doesn't make enough sense to me.
You probably know about edutainment, which has a great, Homer Simpson-esque, ring to it.
How about: explainamentary.
It's tough in a way to coin a new term, because your format produces short videos: the most common name for that kind of format is a "short." But, that term feels more outdated since the YouTube era, anyway.
Is there even a general name for the 3-5 minute videos that are all over the web now?
Enlightment!
I like how it helps people open up their eyes and their mind! A real enlightment! :)
Explainment is Good, but....
it still needs explaining. We were just talking in the office this afternoon about what you do, and were having the same problem of trying to explain what you do without just showing one of your videos.
I vote for explainment
I agree that explainment really is simple and understandable. Then you can easily add affixes and suffixes to your hearts to desire when you talk about it without worring about being way too confusing.

So Serious
Thanks for the comments folks. It seems like people like "explainment" which was one we tacked on at the end as a half-serious option.
I have to admit thatI thought the thread might go in the direction of the absurd as opposed to feedback on a new nearly-serious word. I love it either way, but I expected some completely ridiculous words too.
I hope you don't think that we'd actually tell someone that what we do is "Infodocutainmercials". :-)
Name for what you do
How about a "howtoon?"
Your drawings are certainly cartoonlike in character, and they all explain (very effectively) how to do something.
WHYTO (or WHYTOON)
I'm a big fan of your work.
There have been HOWTO's on the 'net for years and years. But never a WHYTO...
RSS in Plain English explains -Why- you should care about RSS.
Toon
This is the first I've ever heard any descriptions of what we do in terms of "toons". Interesting. Howtoon, Whytoon. I suppose there is a toonish aspect.
Names
I think that a name like "info bullets" will be appropriate.

Our product is explanation.
Hmm, this kinda sezit. Your 5400 to 9000 video frames are not a short film, IMHO. You have opened a new category of teaching, this calls for a new word. How about "explaination, the plain explanation [TM]"? Too subtle? Not easy to translate, but then what marketing or positioning term is...
A dozen pages introduction off a book is called a manifesto, see http://changethis.com Now whatchamacallit a thing "in plain English"?
Just infotainment..
I want to call it :
INFOTAINMENT or INFO-EXPLA-TAINMENT
Watch our new info-expla-tainment video.
something like that?
Sometimes it's very hard to
Sometimes it's very hard to describe, but when you have a desire, all words from the world will not be enough to explain your attitude
explainmation or explaimation
i like your stuff a lot and just posted your compact flourescent light bulb "episode". thanks for being you. to see a complete list of the presidential energy policies come see us at www.censys.org
Entercation
So many folks default to "edutainment," but entercation is just as plausible.
I like these...
HowToon
PlainCast
Or just call it an Explainer
Its not a thing, its a verb!
How about this?
We love your style - and content. How about calling it - FUNdamentals? If that suits you - use it with our enthusiastic support.
My idea.
My idea is...
"First Steps"
It's about making it simple, like a nursery school.
Explenglish
Explenglish!
A good explanation in English....
