Daniel Sevitt of EyeView wrote a great article on ReelSEO.com called "The Three Types of Online Video for Business." The article deserves a full read, but I was struck by this simple diagram that illustrates the types of videos and their expected outcomes.

Good post, but to clarify for some
Read the article...the guy that posted two above me...ideally you'd want to use ALL THREE rather than just the second one you mentioned in order really maximize effectiveness. The offline "viral" video is designed to drive traffic to your site, so you really wouldn't want to just use the on site video unless you're already getting heaps of traffic. Besides...who couldn't use more traffic??

Yes, the graphic says it all. The problem is that most people creating videos go after lots of traffic, so they (try to) make viral videos that never go anywhere. Maybe the focus should be long-term, forcing them to think along the lines of education and loyalty instead of a traffic jackpot.

It is interesting to see how video has evolved in such a short time. Your illustration proves it.
As you show it is good to know the goal of one's video work so as to be able to know the desired result and if that goal is met in the long run.
