In this interview Jim talks to Darian about the Social Software buzz and why Tribe is different. Group Initiation and Member Perceptions

Tom Coates (Everything in Moderation) pointed to a psychological study done in 1959. The bottom line of the study is that people who go through more "harsh" group initiation process are more likely to have a positive perception of the group. Aronson, E. & Mills, J. (1959). It seems to me that most of the many-to-many communication tools came from two very established origins: Email lists (AKA Listservs)- These are email-based groups where members receive email as an inherent part of participation. One message sent to an email address shared by the group is sent to everyone in the group. The largest message boards & forums on the web This site tracks the growth of the most used message boards on the Web in terms of posts and provides graphs and simple stats for most of the ranked boards. Also, it divides the rankings into groups like "General Discussion", "Cars and Bikes", "Video Games", as well as by technology.
