Interesting post. And you're right, the options are exploding. At Tangler we've found providing a platform for a wide variety of interests, as well as a social structure has increased average participation dramatically. I think there's a strong correlation between the barrier to discussion and the strength of the social interaction. i.e. you're more likely to participate amongst friends.
