Finding the Love

This holiday weekend (July 4th in the US) has given me a much-needed break from work and a chance reflect on where Common Craft is headed, now that it’s just over 1 year old. I’ve been thinking a lot about exactly what business I’m in and what business I want to be in.

I awoke this morning to a saddening site. Both my weblogs were comment spammed with a total of over 700 comments. At first I was angry, and then I was overcome with a deep serenity.

Have you checked your domain name registration lately? Does your domain name registrant have your updated contact info? Do you have your account set to "auto-renew"? Go check it now.
Or, be like me and find out one day into a week-long vacation that both your web sites are down (including webmail) because your domain names expired. Not fun.

That's Saturday, the 18th, if you don't have a calculator.
We're leaving early tomorrow for a week-long vacation to the east coast. Part wedding shower, part quality family time, part friend reunion and a lot of relaxing on the beach at Emerald Isle, North Carolina.

RSS readers may have seen an entry posted minutes ago about our weekend trip to Lake Quinault. As you may have guessed, it has nothing to do with Common Craft.
I didn't realize it, but I was posting to the wrong the weblog. I've removed it now, but if you're curious, the entry is in its correct place here.

What really kills me about comment spam is that it comes from people. I know robots do the work, but someone makes a choice in their life to do it, promote it, build it.
Sometimes I can’t believe that people would make this choice in life- to live so parasitically, to leach off of the success of others in the form of trashy weblog comments.

Well folks, it was one year ago today that Common Craft (the company) came into the world. May 13th of 2003 was my last day at Solucient, LLC and I officially started Common Craft on June 1st, 2003.

It's been a great couple weeks for Common Craft, if I may say so myself. It seemed like winning the weblog pitch contest really got this weblog visibility.

I'm signing off for 2-3 days. I'm having that nasal surgery in the morning and will be recovering for a couple of days. If you're interested, I posted a little more about the surgery and why I need it on my personal blog at LeeLeFever.com.

Part of my morning ritual is to check this site’s stats and I probably do it too much. At the same time, it’s part of what keeps me going.
Like almost any weblogger, I seek an audience and want to build a community of readers that get to know and respect me over time. With every post, I’m constantly thinking in the back of my mind...
